  • coffe walnut cake

    Walnut Cake with Coffee Flavor

As fall approaches heavily in Brittany, here is a new recipe for a cake ideal to eat on chilly Sunday afternoons.

  • Plum Cake with Cinnamon

    Plum Cake with Cinnamon Flavor

As an interested reader of this blog you may already have found out that I prefer cooking delicious yet relatively quick and easy recipes. Therefore, I would like to share my recipe for plum cake today. It does not for for plums only but for many other fruit. So, you could easily turn it into a cherry cake for example.

    Stewed Lamb Leg

Here for once is a meat dish: stewed lamb with vegetables. Best is to take meat from the leg or joint. These are not the most expensive parts and by the relatively long stewing they become nice and tender yet stay juicy! Also, this dish is budget friendly and if you have a kitchen garden with herbs and some vegetables it becomes even more affordable. Let’s get down to the preparation though. For the taste I wanted to focus on[...]

  • green pesto genovese thumb

    Green Pesto (Genovese)

Pasta with green pesto (Genovese) is both a speedy but healthy dish To make the pesto you best you a food processor. You could also do it by hand but that takes longer  and the result is less even. Put your basil into the food processor, you can use everything not only the leaves. Add your Parmesan cheese as well as the nuts. The amount can vary depending on how strong you want the cheese and nut taste. I’d say[...]

  • prawn curry coriander tomato salad

Creamy Prawn Curry & Tomato Coriander Salad

Another very easy to cook dish. This creamy prawn curry and tomato coriander salad is a perfect dish for the summer time as it is light, fresh and very tasty.

    Tandoori Chicken

Tandoori chicken is really one of THE classics when people think of Indian cuisine and it’s also one of my favourite chicken dishes. The beauty of this recipe is of course the marinade  but it’s relatively easy to prepare not so so time consuming either.

  • pasta ragu thumb

    Pasta con Ragù (Bolognese)

Another one on my all time classic list: Pasta Bolognese or in this case a meat sauce as it is not 100% after the original recipe. Great dish for busy people as it is quick to prepare and can slowly cook for hours on a low flame. This way you can still work in the evenings and will have a great dish ready when you finish your work.

    Sardines Mediterranean Style

Simple recipe I cook from time to time when I don’t have much time. It is really easy to cook and tastes just great, a classic Italian / Mediterranean Style dish, perfect for a summer evening. You can serve it as main dish but also as part of a bigger menu. Goes great with rice, couscous or a salad.

    My new baby

If you are into cooking, like I am, you know that you need a darn good knife. Today I bought me a new one. A big one If you take a closer look at the blade, you see a nice pattern. This is Damascene Steel. Love it! The knob is made of wood. Feels really nice and heavy in hand. Really looking forward to use it this evening. Have a bison and a kangaroo steak in the fridge

Le Mont Saint Michel

Shadow Mont Saint Michel

Last weekend we visited the Mont Saint Michel. This is a trip we usually do once or twice a year outside the tourist season. The Mont is after Versailles the second most visited site in France so you can imagine how crowded it can get. The main “problem” is that there is basically only one small street leading up the hill to the cathedral which is about 4m wide. The second possibility is the old town wall. Now in march[...]

Jägerschnitzel und Zigeunerklösse

Posted by Kirsten On March - 16 - 2009 0 Comment

One of my basic German lessons contains an exercise about reading a german menu in a restaurant. Last week I did this lesson once again with a new client of mine and it made me think about names of german dishes. What is a Jägerschnitzel? First, a Jäger is a hunter. So now you might think “Ah, I got it. It’s a Schnitzel made out of wild boar or deer or something you hunt in the german forest!”. No, infact[...]

Cancale – the Oyster Capital

I think if you want to visit Brittany you really have to come in spring time. Although the past two summers were horrible, the spring time is simply amazing. Therefore we try to enjoy it as much as we can. Today we went up to Dol de Bretagne because there was a little market with plants and trees mixed with some garage sales. As it was not that great, the first “braderies” of the year never are, we decided to[...]

Afternoon in Saint Malo

Posted by Kirsten On March - 14 - 2009 0 Comment

When I find some free time in the schedule I always enjoy driving up to the coast and spend a little while in Saint Malo. Brittany has a special light which is appreciated  by many painters and also photographers. Some of the greatest Impressionists worked in the region. For picture taking early morning and late afternoon are the best times and I can say that I’m happy with the results of this day. First, we went down the mole where[...]

Dol de Bretagne

One of my favourite cities in the region is Dol de Bretagne. It is a very old town with a beautiful city center with houses that date back to the 16th century. Dol de Bretagne is reputated to be the hometown of the scottish royal house of Stuart. The family arrived in Britain with the army of William the Conqueror. There are many little cafés and restaurants on the main street and next to the cathedral. My favourite café is[...]

Spicy Asian Salad with Filet de Canard Laqué

Posted by Kirsten On March - 11 - 2009 0 Comment

The ideal dish after a long working day, especially when you have to eat late again. For the salad I like a mixture of young leaves and herbs. The dressing is made of ginger, garlic, soy sauce, olive oil, sitchuan pepper, chili, fine chopped onions and cherry tomatoes. If wanted you can even make a warm salad out of it. Fry the duck filet slowly in a pan without adding any oil on the skin side which you cut in[...]

Beautiful evening in Saint Malo. Always great to climb the old stone city wall of Saint Malo and watch the sunset over the Channel.

Short Trip to Paramé – Le Sillon

Posted by Kirsten On February - 28 - 2009 Comments Off

Today was a really beautiful day. As I had some free time in the afternoon we decided to hop in the car and go up to the coast. Le Sillon is still our favourite beach. Great for a walk in the sunshine and some fresh air.

Pictures say more than thousand words. Enjoy! I watched this presentation a several times. Now I am hungry. Gotta go cooking now . Kirsten xx

Hello world! This is the first post in my brand new private blog! I welcome you to my Brittany! After I decided to use my domain www.kirstenwinkler.com for my professionel content I had to take a second decision. Do I keep on blogging about my daily life here in France, or not. Basically, do I have the time, or not? After some weeks without sharing my experiences of my average days, I felt, that I am missing something. And as[...]
